When you take your car into the shop, you sit in the waiting area in anticipation of what the mechanic is going to fix on your car. A lot of the time this comes up during an oil change. Typically the guy with the wrench wants to also change some air filters or something along with your regular scheduled maintenance. Don't do it! This, along with two other things, you can do in the comfort of your garage/carport.
Air Filter Replacement
There are two air filters on a vehicle typically. The engine filter and the cabin filter are the two filters in question when you are told that the filters need changing. You can check to see if they need it, and if they do, you simply head to the auto parts store, give them the year, make, and model and they can get the air filters that will work for that particular vehicle. The air filter is usually a triangular structure on the right in the engine area and the cabin filter is typically behind the glove box; always consult the owners manual for exact locations.
Windshield Wiper Replacement
Wipers can go to crap pretty fast, especially in the heat, and while they are a pain to replace, you can do it yourself. Depending on the make and model again you can get a wiper blade that fits the housing. In some cases the owners manual may be useless in the replacement endeavor, especially if the car uses some crazy setup. YouTube the installation instructions for your car, someone has made one because they've been in your shoes, trust us.
Battery Replacement
This is rather easy. Again, local auto store, year, make, model, and get the battery that is setup for your car. You can pick a brand depending on your taste and need, but in some cases the poles are reversed on some car setups, so don't just grab a battery. At this point it's pretty straight forward, you detach the leads, unscrew the safety bolts that keep the battery in place, pull the old one out, replace it with the new one, and reconnect. Done! Now take the old battery back to the shop so they can dispose of it. Do not leave the battery laying around somewhere!
