Having a well-stocked toolkit full of high quality tools makes any DIY job a pleasure. Rusted, damaged and low quality tools are difficult to work with. Replacing damaged tools is expensive, but it is easy to extend the life of your tools through careful storage and by following a proper maintenance regimen.

The most important part of taking care of tools is storing them properly. Never leave tools lying around on counter tops or on the garage floor. Always put your tools away in a belt or toolbox as soon as you finish using them. Keep your toolbox in a secure, dry place,

Periodically inspect your tools for signs of rust or damage. Treat rust problems by spraying the affected area with WD-40 and scrubbing it with a brite pad. Do not use wire wool or sandpaper because these materials scratch metal easily, allowing more rust to take hold.

Use glue to fix cracked or damaged handles on old, but otherwise serviceable, tools. Make sure that the handle is sound before using the tool. If you have any concerns about how strong the handle is, replace the tool entirely. This is especially important for hammers and other similar tools which may cause injury if not used correctly.

With the proper care, a good tool set lasts many years. Remember that it is easier to maintain working tools than to repair damaged ones. Take the time to put your tools away at the end of the working day. Proper tool maintenance saves time, money and stress in the long run.
