Your tools can collect a lot of dirt and grime over the years and over many uses. Whether they are basic household tools like screwdrivers and wrenches or they are heavy-duty power tools or tools for a mechanic shop, you’ll need to keep them clean to keep them in top working order and to get many more years of use out of them.
Here are a few simple ways that you can keep all your tools clean:
Use a Basic Cleaning Solution
Most tools only need a basic cleaning solution to get off the dirt and debris. You can mix a bucket of hot water with a cleaner like Lysol or Pine Sol, then soak your tools inside. Allow the cleaner to work to get off the oil and other sludge. After a half hour or so, take them out and scrub them with a wool pad or scrubbing sponge. Make sure you dry them completely when you are done so that they don’t rust from the water.
Clean Off Rust
A common problem for all types of tools is rust. You can clean off most rust by scrubbing your tools with a steel wire pad or stiff brush. Whatever won’t come off can be treated with a chemical rust remover or converter. Just follow the instructions on the package to get the results you need. Make sure you scrub the tools thoroughly before applying the product. Otherwise, you could take the rust off but leave behind unsightly bumps in the metal.
Oil Them Up
Keeping your tools well-oiled can prevent the accumulation of debris and reduce the risk of rusting. It can also help keep them in smooth working order. To keep them oiled, you just need to wipe them down with a little WD-40. No need to go overboard: Just a once over should be enough.
